Lock MacBook Keyboard for Cleaning (Free, No Shutdown)

The fastest way to lock a MacBook keyboard for cleaning is a free keyboard lock app: one click blocks every key and the trackpad, the screen stays on, and a hotkey unlocks it when you are done. macOS itself has no built-in way to do this, which is why most people end up shutting down or locking the screen instead, and both have annoying side effects.

This guide explains why there is no native keyboard lock on Mac, walks through the shutdown and lock-screen workarounds and their downsides, then shows how to lock the keyboard but not the screen with Korinotch Keyboard Lock. It ends with Apple's own cleaning guidance so you do not damage the keys while they are locked.

Why macOS has no built-in keyboard lock

Windows laptops often ship a vendor utility for this, and some keyboards have a physical lock switch. Macs do not. Apple's keyboard handling is built around the assumption that the keyboard is always the way to wake, unlock and recover the machine, so there is no toggle in System Settings that says "ignore the keyboard for a while". The closest native features are:

  • Lock Screen (Control-Command-Q), which blanks the display and asks for a password.
  • Sleep or Shut Down from the Apple menu.
  • Accessibility > Keyboard options such as Slow Keys, which delay keypresses but do not block them.

None of these lets you keep watching a movie, keep a download visible, or let a toddler poke the keys without consequences. For that you need a third-party keyboard lock, and the good news is you do not need to pay for one.

The usual workarounds and why they fall short

MethodWhat happensDownside
Shut downKeyboard is inertLose your open work and wait through a reboot; wiping the power key or Touch ID can turn the Mac back on
SleepKeyboard mostly inertAny key wakes the Mac mid-wipe, and typed characters land wherever focus was
Lock screen (Control-Command-Q)Keys go to the password fieldRepeated wrong "passwords" from a cloth can trigger a lockout delay; screen goes dark, so no movie
Close the lidCannot clean the keyboard at allObviously
Keyboard lock appInput blocked, screen stays on, overlay shows statusNeeds Accessibility permission once

Lock screen works for a quick wipe. The problems start when you want the screen to stay on, when a damp cloth hits the Touch ID sensor, or when you are doing it for a child or a cat rather than for cleaning.

How to lock your Mac keyboard but not the screen

Korinotch Keyboard Lock is a free menu-bar mini app for macOS 14 and later. It does one thing:

  1. Install it from the Korinotch free apps page and sign in with a free Korinotch account.
  2. Grant Accessibility once when prompted (System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility). This is what allows the app to intercept keystrokes before they reach other apps.
  3. Click the menu-bar icon or press the lock hotkey. A clear overlay appears telling you the keyboard and trackpad are locked and which key combination unlocks them.
  4. Clean, or hand the Mac over. Keys, trackpad and Touch Bar input are all ignored. The screen stays on, music keeps playing, the video keeps running.
  5. Press the unlock hotkey to resume. Nothing that was pressed while locked gets delivered afterwards.

If you already run the full Korinotch app, the same keyboard lock is built into the notch, so you can trigger it from the island. Our earlier keyboard lock from the notch post covers that version.

Beyond cleaning: kids, cats and movies

Cleaning is why people search for a keyboard lock; these are the reasons they keep using one.

  • Lock MacBook keyboard for kids. A toddler sitting on your lap wants to hit the keys. Lock the keyboard, put on a video, and let them. No closed windows, no renamed files, no accidental emails.
  • Cat keyboard lock. Cats walk across warm MacBooks. A lock means the result is a cat-shaped nothing instead of 400 lines of "jjjjjjjj" in your document.
  • Watching a movie. Lock the keyboard so a nudge of the trackpad does not pause, skip or reveal the Dock. The hotkey to unlock still works, so you are never stuck.
  • External keyboard setups. When the MacBook sits in a stand under a monitor, lock the internal keyboard so stray objects on the desk do not type.

How to clean a MacBook keyboard safely

With the keyboard locked, follow Apple's guidance so you do not damage it:

  • Unplug the power adapter and remove any accessories first. Locking the keyboard handles input; it does not change how liquids behave.
  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth, slightly dampened with water. Microfibre is ideal.
  • Never spray anything directly on the keys. Liquid can seep under the keycaps into the switch mechanism. Spray the cloth, not the Mac.
  • Apple says a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or a disinfecting wipe is acceptable on hard, non-porous surfaces such as the keyboard. Avoid bleach, hydrogen peroxide and abrasive cleaners.
  • For crumbs, hold the MacBook at a 75-degree angle and use compressed air in short bursts across the keyboard, left to right, then rotate and repeat. Keep the straw a few centimetres away.
  • Do not pry off keycaps on a MacBook. The scissor mechanisms are fragile and are not designed to be removed by users.
  • Let everything dry before unlocking and typing.

How to unlock the keyboard on a Mac

If you used Korinotch Keyboard Lock, the overlay shows the unlock hotkey; press it and you are back. If your keyboard stopped working without a lock app involved, the usual causes are different: check System Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard for Slow Keys and Accessibility > Pointer Control for Mouse Keys (which repurposes letter keys), make sure an external keyboard is not set to a different input source, and restart. If a few keys stay dead after cleaning, liquid may have reached the switches, and it is time for an Apple Store or authorised repair.

Is there a keyboard lock shortcut on Mac?

Not natively. Control-Command-Q locks the screen, not the keyboard. Korinotch Keyboard Lock adds a lock and unlock hotkey.

How do I lock my Mac keyboard but not the screen?

Use a keyboard lock app. Korinotch Keyboard Lock is free, blocks keys and trackpad, shows an overlay and keeps the display on.
